17/66: Liner Notes

Around 2014, I had an idea for a new compositional structure I've named harmonic blocks. Compositionally, it is a rather dense concept, and in some aspects almost crosses the line from compositional structure into music theory. It took a few years to be able to realize this concept into my compositions and improvisations. I could both hear and visualize the harmonic blocks as it entered into my compositional vocabulary. One turning point was my accidental yet providential discovery of the Wotruba Cathedral in Vienna. Its design and structure is like a physical manifestation and visual representation of the harmonic blocks concept. While this album is not inspired by or based upon the Wotruba Cathedral, there is a connection.
